Description
Vitamin B-6 is a water soluble vitamin. It is required for the proper absorption of vitamin B-12 and for the production of hydrochloric acid and magnesium. It also aids the function of linoleic acid in the body.
B-6 plays an important role as a coenzyme in the breakdown and utilization of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. It must be present for the production of antibodies and red blood cells.
The release of glycogen for energy from the liver and muscles is facilitated by B-6. It also aids in the conversion of tryptophan to niacin and is necessary for the synthesis and proper action of DNA and RNA. B-6 helps maintain the balance of sodium and potassium, which regulates body fluids and promotes the normal functioning of the nervous and musculoskeletal systems.
High protein diets contain a large amount of homocysteine, an amino acid which is believed to stimulate the growth of cells along the inner walls of arteries. This would have the effect of narrowing the lumen and consequently, the blood pressure rises. Researchers at Harvard and M.I.T. found that Vitamin B-6 helps to eliminate homocysteine from the body. They recommended a dietary intake of 25-50 mg. daily.
